Iraqi Group Says It Executed Italian Journalist, AFP Reports

Aug. 27 (Bloomberg) -- An Iraqi group said it executed an Italian journalist after its deadline expired for Italy to withdraw its troops from Iraq, Agence France-Presse reported.

The group called the Islamic Army of Iraq sent a videotape announcing the killing to the Qatar-based al-Jazeera television station, AFP said. The al-Jazeera report didn't give any other details, AFP said.

Freelance journalist Enzo Baldoni, 56, went missing last week between Baghdad and Najaf. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said the killing ``returns us to the dark times of barbarism,'' AFP reported, citing a statement early today carried by Italy's Ansa news agency.

Italy has 3,000 soldiers serving with the international force in Iraq, the third-largest contingent after the U.S. and the U.K. Berlusconi's office earlier this week said the soldiers wouldn't be withdrawn.
