Bush checked that box that he "didn't want to serve overseas" - and no one from his Champagne unit ever did. Very few National Guard units served in Vietnam. As a person from that era, it was well known the Guard was a way to avoid Vietnam at the time. The Guard and Reserve have much different roles today - the difference is night and day.
The regular service guys I knew at the time regarded the Guard guys as rich boy connected draft dodgers. They had a nickname for them - "sh*theads". Ask any vet from the era, they'll confirm what I'm saying.
