Well, to add to the picture, one of the "jobs" that I have had since I left working for HP in 1998 to be on my own was for stock options only at an internet company. It looked like a good choice until the stock crashed and the company went private. I still have a handshake agreement that amounts to a significant options package if any of my ideas work out to make the company really valuable, but the majority of my tiny "pay" is the old fashioned way, a large percentage of the revenue I bring in.

If they wanted a non-incentive compensation plan, they would work in the oil industry, but that would bore aggressive people who want to be rewarded richly when they and their company do well.

Two employees and I believe they get a tiny salary but have a ton of shares that were issued to them. If they find natural gas, they get paid well as their stock will go up. If they run out of money before they find gas, their stock will go to pennies.

I like that sort of deal in that their interests are aligned with shareholders but shareholders are not looking at such dilution if there is success.

I heard from a VP there that Schwab was issuing restricted stock rather than options to people that got VP level jobs. Chuck is no dummy.

I would strongly dispute your notion that there aren't incentive compensation plans in the oil industry.

Cisco compensates their employees very well, even without the options.
