The message has to be very short and simple enough that it requires no thought on the part of the viewer.

In the debates Kerry should stick to saying "no more lies." That's three words, it's hard to beat that. He should just keep repeating it over and over again, regardless of what the moderator or Bush says.

If he tries to get anymore complicated than that, he will lose the audience.

Edwards should just smile a lot.

And this time they will be seated to make it informal and so Kerry doesn't tower over Bush. Bush has always done well at setting expectations low and then meeting those expectations.

In Game of Expectations, Bush Usually Wins
washingtonpost.com

"I am the master of low expectations," George W. Bush June 2003.

"They created the science of setting the bar low," said John Weaver, the strategist behind the primary challenge to Bush by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). "In fact, they dug a trench and set the bar in it, and he's able to walk over it. They should get some credit for that. He's been able to get away with that."

No argument here. I think the debates ( and press conferences ) should be taken away from the politicos and required by law. The formats and number should be determined by a voters commission. When candidates debate, they're applying for the President job to us, the voters. Do WE get to set the conditons for OUR job interviews?
A press conference is like an ongoing performance review. If I told my boss I wasn't going to attend any performance reviews, I think I'd know what he'd say - what the Donald sez - "You're FIRED!"
