I disagree, Neo: "It is not a question of counting on the goodness of leaders, it is a question of counting on their accountability, and desire to keep their jobs." That doesn't work when (as is the case now) 90%+ of all Reps and Senators nearly automatically win reelection... And the President himself is term-limited. "Divided government provides an excuse for not getting things done, including reducing the size of the federal government." It's not an 'excuse'... it's an EFFECT. "Elect a clear conservative majority, and then hold its feet to the fire to move in the right direction." That might work --- if you could find any True Conservatives --- unfortunately, this current crop may be SOCIAL Conservatives... but they sure ain't FISCAL Conservatives! You have to watch what they DO, not what they SAY. Right now, they are spending to break the bank. Spending like drunken sailors, spending like LBJ reincarnated. DIVIDED GOVERNMENT seems to provide the ONLY CLEAR EVIDENCE of a system in which spending is restrained.
