Only the men there know for sure. Rassmann claims that he saw the splash of rounds hitting around him, and that is why he was sure he was going to die. The VC were famous for their hit and run tactics. They would not stay in a fight where they did not have the advantage. So, the typical response to ambush was to attack the ambush, both to gain tactical position and try to convince the VC that they were in an inferior position. That tactic was seized on by Kerry as a response to the repeated boat ambushes; turn into the attacker, bring all fire to bear, and destroy them or at least get them to flee. I believe there is enough doubt on both O'Neill's interpretation and the memory of those he relies. Many in the media who are following closely seem to agree. But, in the end, the ones hurt most will be the vets. Kerry knows that, and is doing his best to address the issue while not attacking the vets themselves, for they are the real heroes...
