Sistani did not defer to Sadr, he prevailed upon him to come to his senses, and turned the city over to the interim regime. Everyone knows that if the US hadn't held back in deference to the interim regime, the Army of the Mahdi would have been toast, and that Sistani saved Sadr's ass, as well as ensuring that the mausoleum they were hiding in did not sustain substantial damage. We come off as sensitive to Shi'ite concerns, respectful of their leader, willing to subordinate ourselves to the judgment of Allawi (thus proving that the hand off of sovereignty was real), and merciful to those whom we could easily have blown to smithereens. I would say we, and the interim government, got more out of it than Sadr........
