"And that is why we are where we are today."

Sure, you're right: we all DO 'deserve' the leaders that we elect... but that is rather beside the point of this discussion.

"You will not get structural change without a deliberate attempt to curtail spending,"

That's just it: electing a DIVIDED GOVERNMENT *does* accomplish a structural change (at least, until the next election), and historically it has proven to greatly increase the odds for fiscal discipline --- as BOTH Parties are checkmated in their quest to lard pork on their supporters... by the opposition of the other Party.

Given the political state of our nation these days, that may be the MOST that our people can hope for in the short run... and if we have to wait generations for the 'electorate to become mobilized, and vote out politicians from BOTH Parties to enable the massive deficit spending' (a clear majority of ALL politicians on BOTH sides of the aisle in Washington right now)... then we will be ruined far before that ever comes to pass.

Whereas, divided government resulting in 'gridlock' for spending proposals is achievable right now....
