The facts are these. The place was Texas, the year 1968 and the Vietnam War was raging. Bush wanted, like many other young men who did not want to be "the last man to die in Vietnam," to join the Texas Air National Guard. Problem was, the Guard had a waiting list of 500.

But a prominent friend of Bush's father, U.S. Rep. George H.W. Bush, called Texas House Speaker Ben Barnes, who then called the general in charge of the Guard and recommended young Bush for a pilot position. Bush's name then went to the top of the list. (Barnes testified to the truth of this in a sworn deposition in a civil suit in 1999).

Kerry volunteered for service, volunteered to go to Vietnam, and volunteered for Swift boat action. Incomparable to Bush, who volunteered to protect the skies over Texas, to avoid going to Vietnam.
