Even the most proficient pro se person isn't going to get the same amount of deference given to a reasonably competent lawyer. That's been my experience, anyway.

I've been a lawyer for a long time but there are plenty of legal issues I am simply not competent to handle, so I don't even try. I've paid lawyers to handle my real estate matters, and personal litigation. I really should pay a good lawyer to set up trusts for my kids, but keep putting that off.

You wouldn't fill your own teeth, and you wouldn't try to take out your own appendix.
