the stupidity and arrogance of running as some kind of Vietnam hero when he rose to fame as a Vietnam protestor who infuriated millions of fellow vets by slinging around charges of routine American war crimes, is the real subject of discussion.

The hero/protestor dichotomy is by no means inconsistent. I'm personally acquainted with people who were involved in heavy combat and who came away bitterly opposed to the war. Many of them, 10 or 20 years later, could look back on those events with a good deal more perspective. That's perfectly natural.

Did Kerry think that his 1971 testimony wasn't going to come up in the campaign, or that by mentioning Vietnam in every speech he gave was going to somehow prevent it from coming up? What was he thinking?

He wasn't thinking. It looks like his whole team wasn't thinking. If they's stuck to "I went, he didn't, that's all", they would have had a hand that could consistently score points. Instead, they overplayed. Tactical error.
