Totally agree. Kerry didn't really "sign up" for dangerous combat duty in Vietnam. He joined the U.S. Navy. While one can fill out a preference card to where you would like to be assigned, the need of the US Navy come first. The Navy tries to match preferred duty locations and their needs whenever possible. However in Kerry's case, I don't know what he said he wanted. He ended up on the USS Gridley who was all over the Pacific Ocean and spent some time off the eastern coast of Vietnam. After a year, and I might add he performed well aboard ship, Kerry got some idea and I'm not sure why about getting a bit closer to Vietnam...but not close enough for direct combat. He asked to go to Swift Boats who were operating in deep water coaster areas. Then the mission changes right after he got there and he found himself being forced into combat situations.
