The rumors, which are coming from people in Washington, are that the Niger document, the one that said Saddam is trying to buy yellowcake, was forged by one of the subjects of this investigation.

That seems unlikely to me, on the surface of it. A Washington mole would be in a poor position for forging documents, and a poorer one for releasing a forgery. If it were said that the decision to forge the document was based on information provided by the subject of the investigation, I’d find that credible. If the Israelis knew that the Pentagon was eagerly searching for information suggesting that Saddam was developing nukes and getting close to AQ, they would of course have every incentive to provide that information, even if they cut some corners to do it.

I’d place more blame on the people who bought the forgery than on the forgers. The attempts are expected, and professional operators will screen them out. Ideologues looking for any tidbits to support their pet hypotheses won’t.

Almost amusing that the people involved were the same ones that the Iranians were jerking around through the Chalabi crowd. Ideologues are so easy to manipulate…

One of the things you can count on Israel and its supporters to do is a rain dance alleging anti-Semitism and flinging accusations about "cabals" every time they get caught doing something they shouldn't.

Those who fail to prostrate themselves before the Israeli cause are clearly anti-Semites. It’s well known, and we are constantly reminded of it.

Spy rings are spy rings, forged documents are forged documents.

Of course, and both have always been with us, and always will be with us. If we let them play us for suckers and manipulate us into doing their dirty work for them, the blame is on us, not them.

The idea of Michael Ledeen playing secret agent man with a scam artist like Ghorbanifar is bizarre; somewhere between funny and pathetic. Scary, too, if it actually goes anywhere. Does anyone doubt that there will be a whole line of Iranian dissidents eager to tell us whatever they think we want to hear?
