Schachte claims to be on the boat, but the other two sailors on the boat claim he was not. The other two (Runyon and Zaledonis) can't swear by the enemy fire, but claim they know two things for sure:

1) No M-79 grenade was launched by Kerry or them.

2) Schachte was not on the skimmer.

So, I look at the motivations. On one had, what motivation did Schachte have for his memory of the event? A disgust with John Kerry for his antiwar comments. On the other hand, Runyon and Zaledonis don't have that sort of deep hatred of Kerry.

Also, Schachte says:

“My gun jammed after the first burst and I was trying to clear my weapon. John’s gun apparently jammed too,” says Schachte. “I heard the old familiar ‘Thump-pow!’ and I look, and John had fired the M-79 grenade launcher. And there was silence. That’s when I realized that he had nicked himself.”

Why was Schachte firing if there was no enemy?
