Well, then they're guilty of being wrong in thinking it would destroy the rice. Clearly this incident had little to do with the subsequent action.

Exactly, using nades to "destroy" rice is the equivalent of using your hands to destroy silly putty.

Sounds like the grenade in the rice was an ineffective tactic. Perhaps the Navy never trained him in rice destruction.
