The media is telling the people that even though its not true. And the media has subjected them to smearing and mockery. I think a great example is the Oliphant cartoon which depicted the Swift boat vets as a bunch of drunken former latrine maintenance men grousing over their beers. O'Neill, the head of the Swift boat group, has said they wouldn't stop the ads if Bush asked them to. O'Neill personally is not a Bush supporter and didn't vote for him in 2000. The Swift boat group is all about Kerry, not about Bush. He's being paid back for the trashing of vets in 1971. I've heard a rumor that widows of POW's will be the next group to come out after Kerry. Wonder how they will be smeared?
