And such a worthy ally were they, huh .... you know when 'The Republic of Vietnam' was invented? .... 1955 .... the french had declared the existence of an 'Associated State of Vietnam' the year before, following the Geneva Accords, they felt they could hold everything from the DMZ south ..... the way Diem got in as president was the same way he ruled, crooked as a barrel of snakes .... his generals tended to get rich fast, you pretty much know something's wrong when that happens, even if you haven't noticed them harassing buddhists and dissenters The vietnamese had by that time been fighting off invaders for over two thousand years, the chinese alone for one thousand, the french recently for over one hundred, the japanese for five years or so .... what would a few months of Diem's regime mean to them, no matter what you called it - not very much at all, since the people it ruled never did support it They got ground under by the worldwide passion for yet another stupid dichotomy, the dividing up of all politics into commie or anti-commie ..... 'yer with us or yer agin us', see that's been said plenty before Bush .... by the end of the war it was fairly strong, that division, then it got by 1950 or so to be hysteria-producing, all was defined by how communist it appeared to be, didn't matter if you were the ratepayer's association for Amblesnide and Tiddleycove, you had to speak up against un-Amblesnide activities, or get tarred for committing them ..... and it's a fact, the vietnamese did wind up tangled in one of the isms, they have yet to get over it .... but one thing for sure, they are not occupied by anybody foreign, and no one appears eager to try it on them again, either
