Without a doubt the US knew tensions were running high however, and the US helped instigate those tensions. However the US was likely more right than wrong. The whole issue was really quite simple, allow Japan to be imperialistic in Asia like the European countries were, or not to allow. Course we had to side with our cousins.

In edit. Most of Japans pre WWII aims were eventually accomplished, post WWII.
