I guess the "hundreds of thousands" turned into "tens of thousands." The Times does not give an overall crowd estimate.

Tens of thousands of people marched through the midtown area of Manhattan today in a demonstration carrying messages against war and the Bush administration, passing by the site of this week's Republican National Convention, which starts on Monday.

New York City has braced for protests by hundreds of thousands of people, including the largest rally, that planned by United for Peace and Justice, which expected about 250,000 people to join in.
