One thing many people never mentioned was that
Vietnam was considered to be a pushover and the war would be over in a relatively short time. So they didn't bother to protest until much later. As a matter of fact, many young Americans who sought deferments from the draft seriously thought the war would be over in a year's time.

Some Vietnamese told me that one outcome of the war was that US forces and Americans in general finally began to have a healthy respect for the Vietcong fighters and for Vietnamese in general, albeit rather grudgingly.
