Are you sure you are not kidding?

As I understand it, the USSR broke into bits and pieces. There were breakaway republics. Today, what was formerly known as the USSR is not even a pale shadow of its former self.

I think it became increasingly more difficult to control people with needs and limited resources. The economics became perplexing. The cost of trade mounted. Without peoples incentive to earn more, the Soviet Union crashed under it's own weight. The spent far too much on defense and offense and too little developing an economic infrastructure.

The period of "hold" created during the cold war began to settle in the minds of the Soviet people. There was truly nothing for which to prepare and therefore little for which to motivate their enduring sacrifices in living conditions. Exposure to the lives of the outside world was a distrubing contrast to many. Word got around.

The cold war's elongated time span defeated them. The reality sunk in.
