Kerry Stonewalling on Medals Mystery

Kerry campaign officials are refusing to answer questions about discrepancies in the military records posted to the presidential candidate's campaign web site after Navy officials and outside experts challenged the authenticity of some of Kerry's decorations.

Chicago Sun-Times reporter Thomas Lipscomb said Sunday that he's tried to reach Kerry campaign spokesman Michael Meehan ten times about the controversy - all without response.

"I [also] tried to get John Hurley, head of Veterans for Kerry, to give me reaction," Lipscomb told WABC Radio's Steve Malzberg on Sunday. But he wouldn't respond either.
On Friday Lipscomb reported that former Navy Secretary John Lehman is challenging citations posted to Kerry's campaign web site that include his signature.

"It is a total mystery to me. I never saw it. I never signed it. I never approved it. And the additional language it contains was not written by me," Lehman said.

B.G. Burkett, author of the definitive book on fraudulent medals, "Stolen Valor," told Lipscomb there's a problem with the citation for Kerry's "Silver Star with Combat V."

"I've run across several claims for Silver Stars with combat V's, but they were all in fake records," he told Lipscomb.

Several of the military records that appear on Kerry's web site "appear to be fraudulent, according to U.S. Navy standards," the Sun-Times reporter told Malzberg.

"The Navy is now saying Kerry's records are incorrect," he added. "He's not entitled to this award. He's not entitled to that award. This is a new ballgame."

Bush: Kerry Soft on Cuba
NewsMax Wires
Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004
MIAMI -- President Bush wooed the state that decided the 2000 election with a pledge Friday to seek $2 billion more for hurricane recovery, and launched a fresh attack on Sen. John Kerry's commitment to ousting Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

Thousands of Cuban-Americans filled the indoor arena where Bush spoke, part of a subtle effort by Bush to back the Senate candidacy of Mel Martinez, his former housing secretary. The Cuban-born Martinez is in a contest with fellow Republican Bill McCollum. The primary is Tuesday.

The audience erupted in cheers when the president declared: "The people of Cuba should be free from the tyrant. And I believe that enforcing the embargo is a necessary part of that strategy."
Speaking at a rally, the president said Kerry had flip-flopped on the Helms-Burton Act signed by President Clinton in 1996 that tightened the U.S. economic embargo against Cuba.

Kerry spokesman Phil Singer said Kerry had voted for Helms-Burton twice but voted against the final bill because he objected to certain provisions. Singer did not elaborate on the language Kerry opposed.

Friday was Bush's third Florida visit this month, and another is planned after the GOP convention.

Hillary: Ban All 527's, Laura Wrong to Defend Swiftvets

New York Sen. Hillary Clinton said Sunday that she would support "a truce" that would ban all further broadcasts of political ads funded by 527 groups for the duration of the presidential campaign.

The move that would put an end to commercials by the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth as well as millions of dollars in campaign commercials by Democratic groups like MoveOn.org, America Coming Together and the Media Fund, run by Sen. Clinton's former top aide, Harold Ickes.

The top New York Democrat was asked by NBC's "Meet the Press" host Tim Russert, "Why not have, in effect, a truce, and pull all 527 ads down on both sides?"
Sen. Clinton replied without hesitation, "I'd be for that."

But in the next breath she added, "I don't think you'd get agreement on that, because there's too much intensity and too much money [involved]."

Calling ads by the Swiftvets "smears" and an attempt at "character assassination," Mrs. Clinton attacked First Lady Laura Bush for defending the 527 group in an interview with Time Magazine released Sunday.

"Oh, I think [Mrs. Bush's defense] is unfortunate, because [the Swiftvet ads] are not only unfair, they're flat-out wrong," she told ABC's "This Week." "Even the president has regretted that they're being used in this way."

But after citing President Bush's condemnation of all 527 ads, she accused him of secretly engineering the Swiftvet campaign, telling "This Week," "certainly people close to his campaign have been involved in them. If you find a turtle on a fence post, you know, it didn't get there by accident."

Asked about the Swiftvet ads, Mrs. Bush had told Time, "Do I think they're unfair? Not really. There have been millions of terrible ads against my husband."
