Since you bring this up, define 'abortion'.

The abortion issue, as I said, is a legal matter. Abortion for that purpose is whatever the law says it is, which would cover abortions other than spontaneous ones during the period between conception and first breath, to the best of my knowledge. "When life starts" informs the abortion question but is not the salient question, which is convenient since there are such differences of opinion and few clear demarcations in the continuum.

As for stem cell research, that is a very different issue from abortion. When life starts is more immediately relevant there. Conversely the impact of a birth on society and the well-being of a mother are not factors as they are with abortion.

As you may recall, though, we were talking about the social impact of additional unwanted births. I, like the author of that email, would very much like to hear from the pro-life advocacy groups what ideas they might have on how we should deal with that impact were abortion to be outlawed. The failure to address that costs them credence. (Sort of like invading a country without knowing how to establish order once the country is occupied. <g>)

many late term abortions are because of discovered defects in the fetus.

Yes, I agree. I made the point in my response to LB that mercy killing is a factor in a small percentage of abortions. I agree that cost control may be another factor. I would think that both would weigh heavily on anyone faced with that decision.
