Good answer uw...I remember reading early during the elephant wars when Rumsfeld looked favorably at Gen Franks....probably just for the reason you mentioned...continuous field command time....Had he crossed Rumsfeld as C/S Army or C/JCS...... I should say WHEN he crossed Rummy,....Franks would have come from a position of strength...UMHO....However, after years of staying away from the flag pole, he was a realist...a lot more fun things to do in life while he's young than to butt heads with the SecDef....Would have been a lonely, private contest....We need him though....
