And I liked him. He was pleasant to the point of being jovial and it seemed not to matter to him that my conservative politics are l80 degrees out of phase with his own liberal point of view. Having said that, let me add that I both pity and admire him. It is hard not to pity a man who has lost both legs and one arm because of a war instigated and enlarged by two of his heroes, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. To make things worse Cleland’s grievous wounds were not the result of enemy action so he was not eligible for a purple heart while another of his heroes, John F. Kerry has purple hearts for three wounds so minor he was never hospitalized and never missed a day of duty. I admire Cleland because he rose above his wounds to run for and win elective office and to hold high appointive positions. The man has courage and drive and determination and ability; he is hard not to admire. But he lost me the other day when he let himself become a tool of the Kerry campaign and, for the first time that I have seen, clearly used his disabilities for political purposes. Does anyone for a moment think that if Cleland had two arms and two legs he would have been sent to try to see the president at his ranch to deliver a letter demanding that the swift boat veterans quit picking on him. No way. Cleland ain’t dumb. He knew when he went to the ranch he wouldn’t get in. He didn’t have an appointment. This was purely a photo op and the media covering the president knew it, although they didn’t report it as such. All the Kerryites wanted was a picture of a triple amputee, who most people think was wounded in combat, being turned away by an uncompassionate president who, the Kerryites charge without proof, is behind the tv spots being run by swift boat veterans that assert that Kerry is a lying phony. Interestingly, Kerry has the means to disprove charges having to to with his medals if, indeed, they are disprovable. All he has to do is sign afford releasing his military records for public scrutiny. He has refused to do so while continuing to run as a combat hero while at the same time using a disabled veteran as a political shill. What a shame.
