I just read this somewhere, sanctions against Iraq would have had to be lifted at some point - this would open the door to other nations cashing in on Iraq oil reserves and possibly undermining US control. The US could not allow that as our agenda since the end of WWII has been to maintain a presence in the ME to keep control of the oil there. Although I believe GW's pre-emptive war was a mistake, it seems that this has been a bi-partisan policy for many decades.
