I suppose it is bigger and more powerful than a libertarian would like. The question is, is it too big and powerful relative to the modern needs of a large trading nation? Past a point, one may as well complain because carriages are no longer horse-drawn, or offices are electrified rather than depending on wax candles. We need criteria to determine what kinds of investments in government are appropriate, and which are not. Part of our calculation has to be "what befits a great nation?"
