Saddam did use WMD (poison gas etc) against the Iranians and the Kurds during the Iraq-Iran War (1979-1988) BUT it was supplied by the US. Go ask Rumsfeld about it.

IMHO, Saddam was maneuvered by the US (and Israel) into going to war with Iran in 1979 to help the US, incidentally, to stop the export of the Shi'ite revolution from Iran. The Shi'ite Revolution posed a serious threat in more ways than one to Saudi Arabia, American vested interests there and Israel. By the way, the US also sold modern weapons to Iran to fight the Iraqis. Evidently, the long-term plan hatched at the time was for the war to cause Iraq and Iran to mutually emasculate themselves for easy takeover by the US at a later date. (Like right now (2003/2004) in Iraq.) Looks like Iran is next, eh?

If Bush had PROVEN Saddam had WMD's he could have gotten the entire UN behind him and we'd have saved thousands of troops killed and wounded plus a hundred billion bucks or more.
