Ummm... maybe it's just really hard to get a nuclear weapon, let alone to smuggle a functioning nuclear weapon 10,000 miles? Maybe there just aren't enough people with the desire to do so?

Since WW II, we have been told by our leaders that we are under threat from attack.....especially nukes. A nuke in Times Square is no scarier that an armada of missiles flying over our borders.

The difference is that MADD worked perfectly. We all knew that the Soviet Union wouldn't attack us for fear of obliteration. MADD doesn't work with these fanatics who can't wait to give their lives to god.

Huh? MADD? Mothers Against Drunk Driving? What are you talking about?

People who claim the fear is overstated look pretty stupid, if you ask me.

I suspect that's because you are gripped by fear. For those who are not, all this warmongering looks pretty stupid.

And all the money we had spent on defense......the trillions over 50 years....all the elaborate preparation.....bases, secret headquarters, stealth fighters....all the worrying and fear.....generation after generation........was all for naught.

Nonsense. Those expenditures (and the promise of additional future ones) won the Cold War. Hands down. Without firing a shot. That's what you WANT to have happen.

Whatever......we have argued this point before.........the GOP thinks those expenditures won the Cold War hands down. I will let historians determine the reality.

The attack finally came and we were not ready nor are we ready now.

We were not ready. But we are a hell of a lot more ready today than we were 3 years ago. There is no comparison. Could it still happen? A person would have to be an idiot to think it couldn't.

Whether we are more ready or not is a moot point. 9/11 could happen again in a flash. In a democracy, you can never truly be ready.......to whit, Israel. That's why exacerbating the situation by attacking Iraq is a very foolish move perpetrated by people with little foreign experience, an immense naiveté and a too strong belief that American firepower is infallible. There's no surprise they are going after Wolfie now and Rumsfeld has been relegated to a 'back office'. Even many in the GOP recognize the huge mistakes that have been made vis-a-vis Iraq.

I am fairly certain that the next attack will not be a nuclear devise in Times Square nor will it be a nuclear missile nor will it be a plane flying into the WTC. I don't know how it will come ...

You don't. And I don't know how in hell you can rule out a suitcase nuke in Times Square.

Most people in the know say that its not possible to buy a nuclear bomb on the black market at the present time. And if you were able to buy one, it would cost a small fortune. Therefore, the likelihood of a nuke in a suitcase in Times Sq. is pretty much slim to none. However, there is the possibility of a dirty bomb but that too would cost a great deal of money and it does not lend itself well to the bomb in the suitcase approach. In fact, if you look closely at all the possible terrorist threats we have been given to worry about, the plane in the building approach or a truck bomb are still the most likely forms of terrorism. And frankly, the chance of preventing those possibilities 100% is unlikely.

And when you understand that thoroughly and you have looked at the problem rationally, you then realize how absolutely absurd the attack on Iraq is. It is costing us many billions and tying up so much of our troop power that could be used in a more effective war on terrorism.

What's astounding is that you still buy into it. Unfortunately, you seem to be on the same learning curve as many Americans.

Smarter, more knowledgeable people than you and me combined believe it could happen.

I've seen what supposedly "smarter, more knowledgeable" people have done in Iraq. I am not impressed.

I'm not sure why we shouldn't take their word for it. But Bush has clearly taken every conceivable step to make it less likely. Still, it could happen. Why you think it won't is beyond me -- if Bush has done such a bad job, how on Earth could you make such a brash assumption??? Your remarks are just totally illogical and inconsistent.

No, they are not......see the above. I do think that Bush's approach will make it more likely but I also think its inevitable that an event will happen, and there is little we can do to stop it.

There are some real international problems in the world that are not being addressed and that must be addressed before terrorism can be stopped. And those problems can not be addressed with shock and awe.

but I know one thing for certain.........starting pre emptive wars in the ME will not spare us nor prevent it.

You are at odds with some of the most knowledgeable people in the world on this subject.

Like I said, I am not impressed. The Rumsfeld approach to solving our foreign problems has been used since time immemorial. It usually fails but there is type of human, Rumsfeld being one of them, that is just sure if they do it with just the right finessing it will work. They are wrong...unfortunately, they tend to be fairly bright and persuasive, and eventually find someone to fall for their approach........Bush was just one of their victims, Blair another.

The list who have failed is a long one.........and I guess it will grow longer until genetic engineering takes these people out of the gene pool. They have become an extravagant luxury that this small world can not afford any longer. They run the risk of ending the human race.
