Brazil to Cancel Almost All Debt Owed by Mozambique
VOA News
01 Sep 2004, 15:19 UTC

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has forgiven nearly all of the $331 million in debt Mozambique owes his country.
President da Silva Tuesday signed an agreement to write off 95 percent - or $315 million - of the debt. The move came at a ceremony in Brasilia attended by Mozambique's President Joaquim Chissano.

The Brazilian president said his cancellation of the debt could serve as an example so countries as large as Brazil can make a similar gesture to other poor nations.

Brazil itself is one of the world's most indebted countries, with more than $200 billion in foreign debt outstanding.

Some information for this report provided by AP and AFP.
