GM August Sales Down 7%; 3Q Production Views Unchanged
DETROIT -(Dow Jones)- General Motors Corp. (GM) said August U.S. sales fell 7% from a year earlier, "somewhat" short of expectations.

The giant car maker also said its prior third-quarter production forecast remains unchanged at a level 3.6% lower than the year-ago period and set an initial fourth-quarter production target at a volume 6.8% down from last year.

In a press release Wednesday, General Motors said it sold 406,623 cars and trucks in August, citing tough comparison against strong year-ago sales of 472,427.

Car sales slipped 2% to 170,634 vehicles, and truck sales declined 10% to 235,989 vehicles, despite strong showings from Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC, Pontiac, and Hummer.

The current period had 25 selling days, down from 27 a year ago.
