It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess of the public treasury. From that time on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the results that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship." -- Sir Alexander Fraser Tyler A email survey with results from Senator Barbara Boxer's office: CONSTITUENT SURVEY RESULTS Dear Friend: Thousands of people have visited my Senate website and filled out my on-line health survey. Because the results are so striking, I wanted to share some preliminary results with you. The final results will be available on my website after November 8. Federal election law will preclude updating my website until November due to the election on November 2. The Californians who have responded to my survey have shown their overwhelming support for providing affordable health benefits to all Americans, tax deductions for companies that provide health insurance to their employees and tax credits to individuals for health insurance premiums. Clearly, these results continue to make the case that Congress and the President should turn their attention to addressing the vital issue of health care in America. These and the other preliminary results are listed below. I hope you will return to my website after November 8 to view the final results. 1. Health insurance premiums continue to increase. I have written legislation to allow taxpayers a $2,000 deduction from their gross income. Do you agree that health insurance premiums should be deductible? Yes - 96.8 % No - 3.2 % 3. The new Medicare law included a ban on the Medicare program being able to negotiate for lower drug prices with drug companies, unlike the Veterans Administration. I support legislation to change this. Do you agree that Medicare should have the same ability as the Veterans Administration and the Department of Defense to negotiate for lower prices? Yes - 98.1 % No - 1.9 % 5. The prescription drug benefit provided under the new Medicare law shuts down when seniors reach $2,250 in prescription drug spending, and it doesn’t pick up again until $5,100 in spending. I am planning to offer legislation to eliminate this benefit shutdown. Do you support this? Yes - 94.8 % No - 5.2 % 6. One of the highest costs for medical care is prescription drugs.
