I've been a science fiction fan since I was a pre-teen. A great story I recall, that's probably in a lot of anthologies is "The Marching Morons". The basic premise of the story is that civilization has enabled the less intelligent to outbreed the more intelligent, and short circuited evolution. The more intelligent are more likely to limit family size, consider consequences and use birth control. Anyway, in this grim future, the intelligent are frantically trying to keep society together for everybody, but there's not enough of 'em. I think we're there..
