Part of it is failing to get incompetent doctors out of the profession. Bad doctors are very very very bad for costs. Predatory torts are the partner of bad doctors. Thats where the money is going instead of patient care. Ridiculously long hours for doctors and interns and nurses is another major problem that just asks for mistakes to be made. Pilots are required to have 8 hours sleep. The guy performing surgery on you...well its not 8 hours sleep.

Have you broken down the 70k? I doubt a large percentage went to liability insurance. When my mom was in the hospital, they charged her .50 per cotton ball and .75 for each aspirin. Like you, her insurance covered it. When I challenged the hospital on these charges, they claimed it was to subsidize the uninsured - not to pay liability insurance. Note that in CA, where liability is capped, insurance cost hasn't declined. The issue is a straw man.
