It wasn't 4 months leave of absense it was an indefinite assigment to the 9921st Air Reserve Squadron as a non-drilling reservist. The ANG changed its mind in August 1972 and requested that GW find a drilling unit in a letter. The letter was not a scathing rebuke. It contained no threats. There was no accusation of AWOL or desertion. The letter simply said that GW cannot fulfill his obligation with the 9921st. Bush found a new unit, the 147th quickly, received orders to it and drilled there in Oct and Nov 1972.
