Iraq war = Elephant in the room .....

.......... Neither Bush nor Kerry wants to discuss the Iraq war even though it's the elephant occupying the best seat in the living room.

It is the biggest blunder of Bush's administration by far. Kerry was beaten by a patriotic frenzy back in 2002 to give Bush what I call "war powers." We all seem to forget that that did not order Bush to invade Iraq. Kerry just helped give him that bargaining chip Bush so desparately wanted in order to compell Saddam to disarm. Kerry should at least say Bush should not have invaded Iraq without having first built a multilateral coalition that included the vast majority of our European allies.

Frankly, I believe Kerry wants to come right out and say that Bush should not have invaded Iraq. Period. But he has not done that. He has engaged in esoteric talk about not using correct processes: U.N., allies, etc. Why can't he say that it was all a big blunder? It has been a big blunder! The problem is that the majority of moderate and conservative voters think that the war was a good idea. That's the problem Kerry faces.

Kerry's boxed into the center and is forced to speak in tongues to a semi-literate public that basically supports the absurd policies of Bush. He takes the left for granted. People like me who thought the war was a hideous mistake even when it was insanely proposed in 2002 are going to vote for Kerry no matter what he says in the next two months. Bush is a proven incompetent who has engaged in, I think, "catastrophic success.” Almost $150 billion wasted, almost 1000 dead soldiers (and countless maimed, I might add), a homeland that is probably no more secure than it was on September 11, 2001, and a thriving hornets nest established in the Middle East. This is the record upon which Bush is running for reelection. Absurd!

My wife works at Starbucks part-time so we can have health insurance. A 20-year-old co-worker says he's voting for Bush because Kerry would let all the gays get married. Jesus! What in the world matters in this country?

It's no wonder the Europeans think we're all screwed up. We are left now with a campaign revisiting the travails of the Vietnam War while a new Vietnam War rages in Iraq. The ironies are incomprehensible.
