He's retiring the end of this year anyway, almost assuredly to be replaced by my congressman, a Republican from way back (a rarity in GA) who Zell, when he was governor, appointed to fix a badly broken state school board. Zell has always been a Democrat, but he has also always been willing to reach across the aisle to tap the best person for the job at hand. Right now, he sees GWB as the best person for the job of president.

BTW, once he leaves office, there is no reason for him to change parties - or even officially associate himself with either. In GA, voters do not register as a Democrat or Republican. We are just voters.

Zell will soon be teaching history or political science to college students and enjoying his retirement from politics. I'm sure he will remain outspoken, but I'll bet he will never actually switch parties.
