Kerry very much influenced Nixon. Read the Watergate tape transcripts and you'll find plenty of Nixon obsessing about Kerry. Kerry was so effective that Nixon knew he might become a new Kennedy and inspire the moderates to force him to end the way. It was that powerful. That's why Nixon ordered Kerry "destroyed". Nixon had two things done, useed Colson to sick O'Neill on Kerry. That didn't work. Then had the FBI follow Kerry for two years. But they found no dirt on Kerry the whole time, including anything in his war record. The FBi concluded Kerry was a "moderate" who was just very serious about wanting the war to end in order to save his fellow soldiers.
