Well I agree that there has to be a whole lot more to it. In the case of the Chechnyans, I know that they will not stop until the last one of them is in the grave or until the Russians leave their region.

In other situations there are more instruments that need to be engaged besides the military. Education, opportunity to select alternatives (like democracy), economic support, diplomacy, etc... However, unlike you, I think a strong military is a must. There are too many regimes that have conquered and oppressed people who had no adequate defense. Fight them on the battle field when we can find them and provide avenues for a better life when we have the opportunity. Its not one or the other and there are no cure alls. Beating Saddam was not an end to things and when Iraq is settled there will be much more to do.
