If the Chinese do not improve their environment they will be putting us at risk as well as themselves -- it is not like we are perfect. Our main areas of concern relate to global warming -- we consume far too much energy for our own good. This is a subject that Americans would like to sweep under the carpet -- or under the SUV. The Chinese are doing the same to deal with this issue -- nothing. But it is deadly serious and has serious immediate and long-term implications. The Chinese are doing extremely well economically, and this is having an unwanted side-effect -- higher energy prices and soaring greenhouse gases. The environment? To hell with that so long as we are making money.

For the USA, Bush flushed the only initiative on global warming down the toilet -- politics wins out over responsible leadership once again. As with so many critical issues, the environment does not care who is President of the United States, and we will all end up paying the price if China and the United States do not get smart and do it now. The prognosis? Four more years of growing energy shortages and rapidly expanded greenhouse gas pollution -- more of the same. We waste so much time on BS partisan politics and spend almost no time discussing the issues -- it is a very sad situation. In the end, we vote for the guy who offers us the most candy, the least homework and visions of free lunches to the horizon -- and we then waste our time thumping the table to defend these idiots.
