Remember when the Japanese "accidentally" bombed the Panay in the Yangtze River in the late '30s? (I don't mean you were there!) Well, at least they apologized. Then there was some stuff about the Lusitania being torpedoed "contrary to orders." Yes, a familiar ploy.

That Coventry bombing cost Hitler the Battle of Britain. Up until that point, Hitler had been attacking British airfields and the RAF was on the ropes. After Coventry, Hitler turned to the cities and away from the airfields. The RAF was able to recover from that point forward.
