The Chechens live, act like, and speak Russian. They can hide easily in the population. And there are a lot of them there. Plus, they have an enormous resentment of the Government built up. Makes it easier to find converts. And they are Muslims. Al Qaeda sends some people in and sets up a cell without much problem.

Lot tougher to do here. Our biggest weakness is that we are still letting muslim foreigners live here. If we are hit like Russia, this will change. Our PC was one of the reasons for 911. We were not profiling. I am not sure we would have stopped them getting on the planes, but we didn't even try. And we are still letting them board with little problem.

A similar attack inside the US would strengthen the resolve. However, since it happened in faraway Russia, many people - realizing our own vulnerability - may (mistakenly) decide that perhaps they should vote for a man who might "soften" the tensions. I wonder if this consideration wasn't part of the plan.

More subtle than Spain, but it still might be - in part - an attempt to influence the election.

An indiscriminately harsh response by Russians would also send some wind into Jihad's sails.

Islamists want political power in their countries - and a "clash of civilizations". They act locally, but think globally.

I think you are correct, quehubo...Once mothers in the USA feel that their children have become a target of the terrorists you wont find them taking pleasure viewing movies such as 9 11 or listening to John Kerry talk about working with Spain and France. The threatened moms will be screaming "what ever it takes".
