You're post reminded me of a family incident. Whenever the subject of rifles came up in conversation, which wasn't very often, my husband would say he was considered an accurate shot during weapons training(M-14 rifle) with the National Guard and that he was disappointed to not receive the highest rating. He was going through his NG mementoes couple yrs ago & came across the Sharpshooter pin. For the 1st time he read the accompanying paperwork and lo & behold he realized it said "Expert". For all those yrs he didn't realize that he had indeed received the highest rating,.
