Howard unfazed by doctors' Iraq statement

Prime Minister John Howard said today he did not agree with 54 of Australia's leading doctors who today came out against the Iraq war, but said they had a right to express their view.

The joint statement condemned the Howard government for taking Australia into a war which caused horrific injuries and loss of life to Iraq's people, particularly children.

The doctors, from all over Australia, called on the incoming federal government to ensure it met Australia's moral responsibility to make amends for the ''tragic mistake''.

''I respect their right to have another view, this is a democracy,'' Mr Howard told reporters.
