"Current views on Manifest Destiny Publicly, the U.S. government currently disavows a policy of Manifest Destiny in favor of self-determination. It frequently expresses a desire and motivation to see the ideals of democracy spread all over the world, and feels that successful democratization of a non-democratic nation preserves or adds security (economic and political) to that country and its neighbors. Many critics of American power see this merely as a resurgent form of Manifest Destiny, and a justification for the U.S.'s military activities. They cite cases where the pursuit of "American interests" has had extreme detrimental effects on peace, justice, and freedom in less-stable areas of the world, particularly when those interests were in direct competition, or outright collision with the economic, military, territorial or political interests of other global powers. A recent and highly contentious example of this is the 2003 Iraq War. Ostensibly waged to liberate Iraq and provide security to the U.S. from weapons of mass destruction, it also brought Iraq (and its extensive oil resources) into the orbit of American allies. The true motive for this action remains a matter of intense debate."
