As Russia begins two days’ mourning, Breslan school siege death toll climbs past 500. Number of missing hostages drops from 260 to 180. More than 400 still in hospital, some in grave condition. First funerals began Sunday.

In tough, fighting televised address to the nation, Putin declared Saturday Russia has the single choice of fighting terror. It will be a cruel war, "but if we surrender, millions will drown in rivers of blood.”

Terrorism is not an internal matter, he stressed, but a direct intervention by international terror against Russia. He pointed out that terrorists have a particular interest in destabilizing Russia in order to lay hands on its nuclear assets.

He praised “incredible courage” of special forces who sustained heavy casualties in unplanned assault. One officer killed shielding two children, 20 injured. “All of Russia grieves with you,” he said. Putin pledged crackdown on any supporters of terror war “to stoke ethnic hatred and blow up the whole of our North Caucasus.”

He promised to publish findings of inquiry into foreign hand in siege. Two cargo planes from Moscow landed in Beslan with medical teams and equipment. Most gravely injured flown to Moscow.
