Please don't doubt that Yale and Harvard are venal. A rich family that donates occasional cash and has multiperson attendance over the generations will get in past the usual academic barriers. The same for athletes. What's distinctive about such places as Harvard,Yale,etc. are their graduate departments in science which still lead the world. Admission to a science graduate program is strictly by merit. So much for Bush's degrees. Another point: Bush is in my view a disgusting crook. But I think employment in manufacturing would have decreased under Gore or any other Democrat. The onrush of automation and cheap communication with India and China and consequent overseas outsourcing of manufacturing are two unconquerable trends. If America wants to find jobs for future generations, the US must step up spending on education. The US must step up the rate of new inventions. Fat chance with greedy idiots like Bush in charge. I'm a Canadian citizen but I lament the passing of what was once a great democracy. To think that the White House, once home to giants like Lincoln and F.D.R., is now occupied by this charlatan of low cunning and no deep understanding of anything! Unfortunately, Kerry does not differentiate himself enough from Bush since he also stands firmly with the state of Israel against the Palestinians. That's of course the basic reason why Arabs generally loathe the US and don't want to help the US against any group that attacks US troops. It may not be wise of the Arabs but it's understandable.
