Energy is a problem in the US by political choice. We have the resources. We have the technologies. Until we have a real crisis we will not have the consensus we need to do anything.

In the 70s I worked on a number of Synfuel projects for oil shale and clean coal. We have the hydrocarbon resources - in the wrong forms. We have the technologies to convert these resources. We could keep billions of dollars in the US and employ thousands of people in high quality jobs. (Remember - world oil is priced on the margin).

In the 70s we needed >$35 oil, I do not know the current numbers - but if it is $50 - is it not better spent here?

What is needed - price guarantees - an anathema to some as a sop to energy companies. What is needed - expedited permitting (regulation certainty - not no regulation) - an anathema to some?

We simply lack the national will. Sadly, there is nothing in the current national debate to produce the needed consensus. So we will remain - energy dependent by choice.
