SurveyUSA Poll: More Iowans Think Bush Will Win

Des Moines, September 2, 2004 - In Iowa the race may be close but do Democrats really believe they're going to win? We put the question to voters in an exclusive poll taken by Survey USA here in Iowa.

The results are a big boost for President Bush. One political expert here in Iowa says after a month of Swiftboat Ads and a week of the Republican Convention, the survey shows some Kerry supporters are starting to feel like their man can't win.

The poll asked 500 people around central Iowa, who do you think will win the presidential election? 60% of the people who responded say they think President Bush will win. That's up significantly.

We asked the same question back in July. 47% thought he was going to win back then. That's a13% jump. Des Moines Register political columnist David Yepsen says this poll should raise a red flag for the Kerry camp here in Iowa. ""This is a significant finding because a significant number of people think the president is going to pull this one out. You'll even have Kerry people in here saying he's going to win, so if you're the Democrats you have to get your people pumped up here a little bit," says Yepsen.

This does not ask voters who they are actually going to vote for. All those polls are still very close here in Iowa. But still disturbing for the Kerry camp, about a third of Democrats say they think the president will win and nearly two thirds of independent voters in central Iowa think the president will win.

Does the media want Kerry to win and hence is firing up pthe Kerry troops?

Does the media want to discourage the Kerry troops and signal to them that Kerry is a lost cause?

Is the media just publishing it to keep the topic interesting and not give it to any one side so that they can keep selling their paper?

This is a very good thread in my opinion and I hope many people come here to discuss it.

I am going to give it some publicity and I hope SI Admin Dave does not consider it as spam when I do so.
