Thanks.

And I agree with you about long term. Not in our lifetimes, and not in our children's lifetimes, sadly. Look how long it took Christianity to get over the crusades and the Inquisition, if we indeed are over them even yet.

Is it coincidence that a rise in fundamentalism Islam and in Evangelical (fundamentalist) Christianity are taking place in (historically speaking) the same time period?

And is Western Civilization moving toward a more peaceful or less peaceful vision of itself? Certainly the level of discourse in this country has seemed to deteriorate in the past twenty years. I don't recall anybody with the stature and mentality of James Carville or Karl Rove involved in the political campaigns of 1960-1980. Even Nixon didn't engage in that level of rhetoric. I recall my Great Aunt, a staunch Republican if there ever was one, an avid opponent of every Democratic president ever elected, saying to me many times "I may not like the President, but I respect the man in the office no matter who he is because he is the President." How many would say that today?

As just one other example, look at France's problem with a rise of anti-semitism.

I can't see that we are showing the Islamic world a kindler, gentler way to run a nation. And I can't see that Kerry's election would do anything to change that.
